AT&T has been taking orders since the iPhone 3G S was unveiled, but this wireless carrier has begun warning customers who pre-order now that they won't get their device until at least a week after launch day.
Apple's next smartphone will debut this Friday, and clearly there's a great deal of demand for it. Enough of a demand that pre-orders have now exceeded the supply.
A note has been sent to AT&T stores that says, in part:
"Due to the extraordinary demand for iPhone 3G S, all customers placing preorders on Saturday, June 13, 2009 and later, should be informed that their order will arrive at the store 7 to 14 days from their order date."
Only only preorders placed Friday, June 12, 2009, or earlier, are expected to arrive in time for the 7:00 a.m. opening on Friday, June 19, 2009. Customers will receive an e-mail when their new iPhone 3G S has arrived and is available for pick up."
Still Available on Launch Day
Those who haven't already pre-ordered an iPhone 3G S can still get this device on opening day, as AT&T has reportedly reserved some units for those who want to wait in line for the Friday morning opening.
In addition, there has been no word of supplies of this smartphone at at Apple's own retail stores.

Apple's third-generation smartphone will be an evolutionary rather than a revolutionary model. Its feature set will be improved, but not dramatically so.
It will have twice the storage capacity, support for recording and editing video, and a handful of other features, like MMS support. Still, iPhone 3G S will have much in common with the current version. The outward appearance isn't significantly different, and the screen resolution will remain the same.
The release of the third-generation iPhone will happen on June 19. There will be two versions: a 16 GB one will sell for $200, while a 32 GB model will go for $300. They will be available in back and white casings.
