Berlusconi Under Fire for Obama 'Joke'
By Rachel DonadioItalian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi did it again.
Meeting in Moscow on Thursday, Mr. Berlusconi told Russian President Dmitri Medvedev that President-elect Barack Obama "has all the qualities to get along well with you: he's young, handsome and suntanned, so I think you can develop a good working relationship."
Italy's leading daily, Corriere della Sera, ran a video of the scene.
The leader of the center-left opposition, Walter Veltroni, said Mr. Berlusconi's remarks "seriously damage the image and dignity of our country on the international scene," Corriere della Sera reported. Mr. Veltroni — who has been called the Obama of Italy, except that he lost the election – added that such "cabaret one-liners" showed a "lack of respect" unworthy of a statesman.
He called on Mr. Berlusconi "to offer official apologies."
But Mr. Berlusconi said the remark had been all in fun: "Are there really people who don't understand it was a cute thing to say?" he said, according to Corriere. Adding: "God save us from imbeciles. How can you take such a great compliment negatively?"

I am writing from Italy (obviously, how could we remain silent): do you have a vacant hut in Alaska for our braindead prime minister?

I'm Italian, I'm not so pruod to be italian and to be represented by such fools like our prime minister and a lot of other members of our parliament (half of them involved in judgments for corruption, fraudulent bankruptcy and so on).
— Tao75
Please don't mind that fools and pray with us to change as son as possible the whole italian political class.
We're losing our freedom to speech, to vote, to think and to be informed about what our government is doing behind our shoulders (mafia, economy, energy, pollution).
The honest part of our country is trying to survive, but it's harder everyday, but I still hope things will get better…I hope… -
Wow, based upon the above comments, Berlusconi is on the mark with hoping that God will save us from the embeciles. What he had said was that Obama is "young, handsome, and suntanned also" (i.e. just as Berlusconi is). He was thus making a joke about his own age (he's in his 70s and his year-round suntan that he purposefully maintains. People, we need to retrieve our senses of humor that've evidently been lost during the campaigning process here over the past two years!
— Angie -
I'm Italian (I apologize for my bad english), but I can assure that everything Berlusconi said wasn't offensive in any manner! He was only hoping for clear and profitable coopeartion between USA and Russia. All the negative comments in this pages was inspired by a communist TV talk show aired in this moment by the public television (paid with public money).
— Matteo Emanuele
Americans don't be fooled by such communists which are interested only in hated and unproductive debates!
Americas got rid of them a lot of time ago, I hope that they will disappear from Italy too :) -
In italy we have a dangerous virus…….Berlusconi!!!!
— Gigi
Sorry….. -
i'm italian, berlusconi is just a ridiculous idiot,i'm so happy because Barak Obama will be a good president even for the rest of the world.(economy ,rights, and an example for everyone)…….in italy we hope to find a new president like him (not mafioso like berlusconi)!!!!!

I'm another italian, I'm writing from Padua.

I want to say "SORRY" for our prime minister.
I am ashamed of being Italian. -
I'm Italian, and I dissociate myself from what was said by the president of my country. In this moment I am ashamed of being italian, but I ask you to consider that not all italian people is so stupid and so imbecile.
— Mirella
I'm invidiosa, in this moment , American people has got Obama like President. Good job, MR. President Obama. An italian supporter of big OBAMA!!!!
MIRELLA 28 years. -
Hello, we're seven hours later than you…I'm Italian and I'm sixteen.
I think, like you, that Berlusconi is ridicolous(right?), and I hope that you DON'T think that we aren't good people…but our President is really terrible, and I don't know how he went to the power for the second time only one year after the Prodi's governement….I'm so sorry because Berlusconi represent the Italy in the world, so we are disagreeable from a lot of nations, but from this site I ask you to forgive Italy, not Berlusconi!!!
I'm really happy because Obama won the elections, because I think that He'll can change the world, because He's a good man.
I don't know if you know, but here in Italy there's a brand of chips: "McCain"… :-)PS: I used google to find some word that I didn't remember, here there is a quarter to 00!!! I can't remember everything!! Bye
— Manfredi from Italy -
As an Italian citizen, I feel ashamed, and really sorry for you. All I can do is to apologize and to tell you PLEASE: don't think that Italian people are all like him. I didn't vote him, many people didn't (unfortunately less than expected).
I hope we'll keep going in demonstrating against our government, we have to change most of the old, ignorant, MAFIOSI politicians. It's time for YOUNG people like us to make a change… We're feeling this. But I think it will take a long time before our country notice it.
Italians are not patriotic like you, so our government don't feel what our real needs are. They just do their shifty stuff and play on people ignorance (and there is a lot here) to make them believe some things that won't happen.
I'm a University student. After my degree I hope to study for a Master in USA. I admire your love for your country. I admire your will to change, your faith in change.
I do hope Obama's victory will somehow affect Italy people…
Berlusconi term is finishing in 2013. Please cross your fingers for us.

Good luck to USA! Good luck to Obama! -
Obama is giving values to politics at last! That's why many people in the world believe in him. As for Berlusconi, he is a 'poor' man. What a shame to have such an ignorant as a prime minister!

This dream now is the reality : YOU CAN OBAMA!
I hope we italians will remeber how to dream again. -

We have a criminal, arrogant, stupid man named Berlusconi.Unfortunately italian people are too ignorant and stupid and so they voted for him.
I'm sorry for all this. I'll leave Italy asap, but in the meanwhile we will fight against this corrupted power!Oh, another our "great" minister said that "Al Quaeda will be happy for Obama election".

I do wholeheartedly apologise with every American citizen for the shallow ignorance put on display for the nth time by our PM (which stands for Puffo Mafioso or Mafioso Dwarf, rather than Prime Minister).
In a truly civilised society there would be no space for such aberrations.
Gosh, what an embarrassment…

Stupid man, stupid joker!
This is our dark side. The worst of alls!
Mr. Berlusconi is only a litle statment, litle man.
God save the italian people from him.Go America, go Barack Obama, we are with you!
An italian that live in Italy.
— ignazio -
As an Italian I feel offended myself for what "our " Prime Minister ( Not a President) just joked on . Unacceptable in a civilized country. But much more for what this man, will protract with his politics based on corruption, threatens and oppression will bring in our future. The immediate subsequences will be more likely unemployment, poverty, economic depression and resentment . I am sure of what is going on your minds now… Why did your people voted him? Well, he has almost a full control of the media, owns public broadcasting, news papers and magazines. That's why.
— Andrea
You are very fortunate because the dream came true, in a President that gives hope to the young generations for their future. While we have a man that will bring sorrow, and take away our dignities and our future. I
f there is someone that God should give an eye on, it is my people right now.
One last thing, the comparison made for senator Barack Hussein Obama II and our opposition leader Mr. Walter Veltroni, is an huge mistake.
Mr. Veltroni is not even far away closely to be the man that Obama represents andwill never bring the wind of change that did in your country.
Thank you for listening from very far away… -
Berlusconi doesn't know what he says. He's too old.
— Giulio -
Berlusconi makes me ashame of being Italian. Those Italians who voted for him and put him in the office of Prime Minister for 3 times, make me lose hope about Italy. Berlusconi is, if possible, more inappropriate than Sarah Palin. Most US voters were smart enough not to take the risk of having her as President. Berlusconi has so many interests in so many businesses in Italy that in a civilized country he would be considered unfit for any relevant public role. Italy is hopeless.

Shame on him and on the people that voted for him (THREE TIMES). -
Please sorry.
I write from Italy. Our country unfortunately has this kind of PM.
He's dominating italian political scene from 15 years.
Ignore him, he's just interested on being every time considered an important person.
He declared a new law: the 4 most important political leaders, president, PM, chief of the tho parliament rooms cannot be judged. He only works to avoid himself prison.
I support Obama very strongly but also Mc Cain made a very good speech after Obama winning.
This is USA we like.

I'm Italian and I just feel ashamed for this country's Prime Minister who I feel doesn't represent me in any way. Please don't mind his jokes, he just still doesn't understand what's proper to say and what's not proper to say in such a situation, but he's always been like this. He's just a moron that still hasn't understood that Italy is not the world and again, I feel ashamed at his remarks. He'll most likely take it back in a couple of days and nothing he says should be taken any way near seriously. He just hasn't fully realized how serious was this. And the fact that we have him while in America you have Obama is more than enough to show who has it better. I wish I could vote for someone such as Obama, and congratulations to him. Again, I'm really sorry for him.

If Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi wants to tell jokes then he should go on the comedy channel.
Americans do not need any foreigners (outside the USA) making any off brand comments about our President-Elect's race - blatant or indirectly. They should follow our lead - because we ARE world leaders- and realize that we regard this historic time of electing the first AA President as something amazing for our country.
Obama's race should NEVER be the bases for any jokes. RESPECT. Because if there's even a hint of disrespect just because of race with outside leaders - one would think that the blame should be on the shoulders of previous leaders who have somehow extended this notion abroad.
— Roz -
Barack Hussein Obama is the Joke that this nation got played on by a bunch of ignorant voters….unfortunately for real as the POTUS atleast until 2012….Nothing Funny about that …
— reality -
I took it as more of a joke towards Medvedev.
— Daniel -
No, say it isn't so! Leaders around the world look at Obama as an empty suit? Nooooooo.
Seriously, I don't want to disrespect our new President, but you had Sakozy saying that Obama's stand on Iran was a joke, Medvedev/Putin moving missiles into the Baltics the DAY after Obama wins, and now Berlusconi being disrespectful in his public comments…….These world leaders may see Obama as a dilettante that they can move around and discount as a whole.
Not something that I would expect from world leaders when dealing with McCain.
Has Obama even issued a press statement regarding the Russian missile emplacement?
Time will tell……
— Soldier Girl -
Berlusconi should instead that god save him from himself; he's been an imbecile all along. He is just like the the baby boomer rump of the repugs whose stale ideas have been resoundingly hammered. He does not get it. Hopefully Obama will start to change America for the better and Italians will realise that they have a fool for a leader and kick him and his xenophobic sidekicks out into obscurity.
— Kindame -
The fact that Berlusconi thinks "young, handsome, and suntanned" are the only qualities needed to have a good working relationship with Dmitri Medvedev is rather odd, to say the least. However, I suspect Obama (and I hope everyone else in this country) is really too busy right now to remark on what looks like some kind of "inside baseball" political posturing, Italian Style.
— cicero -
You got to be kidding. First he said "Don't joke about my ears." Then it was said this election was not about race….ummmm…did anyone hear his acceptance speech? Did anyone hear what Oprah said? There were many comments in regards to race. AND he is the president. He is subject to criticism, and being picked on; if you don't like it, he should not have been president. It comes with the territory.
— reba
Everyone is already being politically correct and now it will be worst because every comment or joke made about race, someone will be offended. I have two very handsome sons that are half black. You all just need to get your head out of your butt and deal with the comments. Like I said, it comes with the territory. -
So Berlusconi's remarks are "unworthy of a statesman". So what? Who ever confused Berlusconi with a statesman? The man is a loudmouth; he commits dozens of such gaffes a week. Given the very real crimes he and Medvedev are each responsible for, it seems almost indecent to complain about such relatively trivial nonsense.

Poor us…. poor Italy….it's a shame to be italian…. -
I'm an Italian guy who has lived in the USA so I know Italy and USA either, their cultures their values, thei differences, but I've to say that I'm really ashamed of Berlusconi, as the Economist said he's unfit to govern just because he's an ignorant and he represents the worst part of Italy (unfortunately today the worst part of Italy is also the largest part of the population). I want to give my apology to the american people in the name of every Italian that didn't vote for this ignorant and in the name of every Italian that can't really stand this kind of politicians
